Looking to explore the Green Mountains this summer? Whether it’s a weekend getaway or an off-the-grid retreat, planning a stay in the Vermont Hut network is a great way to explore all the area has to offer.

THE CABIN
The Vermont Huts & Trails Network offers 19 remote cabins scattered throughout the Green Mountains and along the catamount trail and the newly developing Velomont Bike Trail, designed for people who want to hike, bike, or just unplug for a few days. Think wood stoves, bunk beds, nearby water sources, and direct access to trails. No frills, but exactly what you need!
One of the most popular options is the Dark Star Cabin tucked on the Western side of Camel’s Hump. A short 1.3 mile hike in takes you to the off-grid, solar powered hut that sleeps up to 6 people. Complete with kitchen, wood stove, cozy living area, sauna and sleeping loft, the Dark Star Cabin is a comfortable combo of remote with legit comfort perks.
Pack Light. Pack Smart
Park at the designated lot (you’ll get directions after booking), and plan to arrive before sunset. The trail is marked but not ideal in the dark. The hike takes ~1-1.5 hours to the cabin, and winds through beautiful forest trails.
Three Days. Endless terrain.
The Darkstar Cabin’s location in Northern Vermont makes it a great basecamp for day trips. The cabin sits just outside Camel’s Hump State Park and is 100 yards off Vermont’s Catamount Trail. Whether it’s summiting some of Vermont’s highest peaks or biking along gladed mountain trails, the outdoor expeditions from the cabin are vast.

For dinner, try your skills at wood stove cooking and enjoy a group meal in the common area. The porch makes for great reading and hammocking sessions in the day, and stargazing at night. The remote and off-grid location of Darkstar makes it an excellent place free from light pollution to view the night sky!
Plan your Hut Trip.
The beauty of planning a Vermont hut trip is that each location provides its own unique landscape, recreation opportunities, and adventures to explore. Whether it’s epic adventure filled day trips or relaxing cabin days, our recommendation is the Dark Star Cabin for those who are looking for an off-grid retreat complete with a few leisurely perks.
